Occupational Therapy

The role of a Paediatric Occupational Therapist?

Occupational Therapy (OT) helps children develop their overall motor performance, which include gross motor skills (balance, postural control and coordination), fine motor skills (bilateral hand use, manipulation and dexterity), self care skills such as dressing and feeding, functional classroom skills such as handwriting as well as improving overall social interactions.

Does your child experience difficulty with any of the following…………………?

  • Fine Motor/Handwriting Skills
  • Functional Skills in the Classroom
  • Organising and Planning their Motor Skills
  • Play & Socialisation
  • Sensory Integration
  • Balance & Coordination
  • Muscle Tone / Postural Control
  • Food Aversions
  • General Developmental Delays

Children can be affected in a variety of different ways by certain conditions such as; Dyspraxia, ADHD, Sensory Integrative Dysfunction, Autism & Autistic Spectrum Disorders including Asperger’s Syndrome, Neurodevelopmental Difficulties including Cerebral Palsy, Developmental Delay and Learning Disabilities.

Occupational Therapy plays a role in helping a child and their families adapt to the resulting physical, psychological or learning challenges such conditions can impose on everyday life.

We at ‘Little Stars’ enable children with various needs to improve their cognitive, physical, sensory and motor skills through a range of meaningful and purposeful activities, based on sound clinical reasoning. Progress in this area has a positive impact on their self-esteem and sense of accomplishment.

According to the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), in addition to dealing with someone’s physical well-being, OT practitioners address psychological, social, and environmental factors that can affect functioning in different ways. This holistic approach is what makes OT a vital part of health care for many kids.
